Why is there a constant yearning for Pokémon’s formula to change into a more “action” oriented gameplay style?

Because right now, battling in Pokémon is boring as hell. It doesn't need to be really "action" oriented, but by God do they need to tweak the battle system a bit to make it more dynamic.

Pokemon's battle system worked in 2D, where you could excuse it as being a abstraction. The sprites and lack of a detailed background let you imagine the real battles yourself.

With 3D models and detailed backgrounds, it's a lot harder to not take what you're seeing literally. It no longer looks like an abstraction, it looks like the Pokemon really are just standing there.

All these hit the nail on the head. Pokemon's the same as it's always been. Fact is pretty much every other turned based JRPG either stuck to handheld, actually adapted to the current market, or flat ditched the concept.

I don't even necessarily agree with all those changes but they all are pretty much doing better off for it.

because /vp/ has played at least 8 long games with the exact same combat system and is burnt out. any newcomer to the series won't have an issue with it just like you didn't when you played your first games.
