It's an upgrade in every way, you actually confront the other trainer, they're actually there, they're part of the world and so are you. The camera zooms in on their faces and focuses on them the same way 2D portraits did, before they actually send out their Pokemon. It's an improvement in every front and makes the whole thing more dynamic and alive. Funny thing is, had they kept the 2D portraits you'd be going "GF is so lazy! Everyone else is moving to 3D and they keep drawing 2D pics because they can't be assed to make a model!"

Literally the opposite. Gen 6 was lazy by using just the official artwork, and it was jarring that only the rivals and some important npc's had models. Where as now every character is actually modeled.

Not really. It's better gameplay-wise, map design-wise and QoL-wise. Gen 7 is bogged down by its worthless story and has shit everything else. Hell, the only thing to praise about it is that at the conceptual stage it could've been something interesting.

You don't even need to have started with gen 2, everybody knows that Emerald was better than RS and Platinum was better than DP, and HGSS are lauded by the community. There are lots of games from what you've decided is the collective childhood period of the majority of the fandom that weren't directed by Masuda and better for it.

I'm replaying Y right now and it's so janky having 80% of the trainers, including gym leaders, have portraits like that but your rivals and Team Flare have models. They really needed to pick one or the other and go with it for everything.
I don't know where all the praise for XY is coming from recently, they're really not that great.
