To be fair they could easily make a non sexual/family friendly dating sim, much like how Harvest Moon and Rune Factory tackle romance. As for child characters, they could have a best friends system.
And yes, I do think such a thing would be massively popular, and now thanks to Masters we got a very, very small glimpse of what it could be like, so they'd just need to go all out.

I don't know what is considered a flop in the gacha market but it failed to cause any real impact despite having a lot of potential. I think gacha game devs just don't want the game to succeed, they all suck at launch and take way to long to fix real issues. This is why FGO and Puzzle&Dragons dominate the genre despite being a decade old
