I hate it when work tries to do stuff because there's maybe like two people there I talk to enough to have any idea what my interests are or for me to know theirs to be able to contribute anything in celebrating their birthdays so it's always generic and hollow. My parents borrow money from me constantly but I still don't feel right when they go out and buy me shit I don't need, it's not paying me back it's exasperating the problem plus they never charged me rent even as an adult with a steady job so covering the occasional bill for them is fair. Going out for dinner I don't mind but again I'd rather spend time together more regularly than rely on special occasions to dictate when we do things. The absolute worst is everything being due on your birthday like car registration and shit, I get they do that so it's easy for you to remember but it still sucks the joy out of what people say is supposed to be special.
