The setting feels completely different from previous games, making explicit references to real life places, events, and even animals.
It seems like a near-future sci-fi-ish setting with the sort of grit that doesn't exist in the newer gens. But it's also something completely its own. I can't think of another piece of media that gives the same vague feel that gen 1 Pokemon does, and I wish the newer gens were more like it.
The gameplay is objectively janky, but I feel like that adds a charm to it. Gamefreak didn't know what they were doing, but they still poured their love and effort into the games.
Gen 1 feels like the gen with the most vision, and that vision didn't compromise, even for the sake of balanced gameplay.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it has, and you can shoot me for saying this, soul.
