ITT:Discuss the Pokemon World and how it functions

Example Q: What happens when a pokemon is inside a pokeball? If pokemon just stay in a sleeping/static state then why do we have different types of pokeballs?

Bonus: If any has the rest of the pages for this manual please post them. I've been looking everywhere and can't find the rest.

Pokemon can survive indefinitely in this pocket world. However they do have some degree of awareness of the outside world and vice versa -see the BW scene with Landorus

Pokemon has some of the worst, most inconstant lore in gaming.

They just provide the bare minimum and make the rest up as they go along.
It would be nice to just get a book filled with stupid canon lore. Just so there is something to work with.

Knowing the way TPC wants their world to be represented lets us know how they think their world actually works.
For instance, you can't claim Red killed Blue's Raticate because pokemon don't die in battle according to them.

As tightly connected to the brand's appeal as the anime is, OLM is a third party producing a pokemon product with permission from TPC, same as anybody else. The point of a style guide is to maintain consistency across the brand, it would be pointless if only the most tertiary products followed it. You probably get more leeway if what your producing has more sway or if you've been doing it long enough, but generally I'd assume even Gamefreak is asked to at least not completely contradict every single thing written in the style guide in their games.

What it says though is obviously something along the lines of; it's acceptable to call Mythical Pokemon "Legendary", but never acceptable to call Legendary Pokemon "Mythical".

The anime is pretty inconsistent about that, sometimes Pokemon are aware of the outside world inside balls and can even break out on their own whenever they want to, but other times Pokeballs are used to restrict Pokemon that clearly don't want to be inside their balls and Pokemon show no signs of being aware of their surroundings or the passage of time while inside their Pokeball.

No, they actually aren't. This manual is for all companies that TPC licenses to make derivative products. GameFreak can do whatever they want, as shown by them breaking multiple of these rules (such as never show meat, never depict death, and never show blood relations) on their own. I'm not saying they don't generally abide by these principles, but they can change their mind on these rules whenever they want.

But the first page says that pokemon learn 4 moves, and they blatantly had a dragonite use like 8 moves so it would "seem strong"

What's always bugged me is how we have pokemon that are incredibly dangerous like grimer and muk (living toxic waste) that says in the dex that if you touch them you'd basically die.

But at the same time you have muk hugging people like ash and james. I guess we're to believe that poison pokemon can control their poison? Or is it similar to Trubbish where as soon as you befriend them the smell/toxins lessen?

This is it. Ever notice how whenever Brock's Croagunk uses Poison Jab on another Pokemon, its entire hand glows purple, but whenever it uses on Brock, only its fingertips glow? It uses less poison on Brock.

Or for other examples, Ponyta/Rapidash choosing for their flames not to burn their riders, or Sharpedo being able to turn off its Rough Skin.

Not necessarily. Marketing is only supposed to present the safest, most palatable version of the product. The main creative team can do things they don't trust outside licensing with, such as sensitive topics (death and blood relations) or confusing/questionable parts of the world (predator/prey, what is food?).

Part of the goal of the guide is to make sure the gaps they don't fill(reproduction, death, food, etc) aren't filled by someone else. Which doesn't mean TPC/GF can't fill them they're just making sure no one else(even if by accident) does.

Anyone watched MegaMew3 stage show? Aside from it being inacurate to how the setting works, it makes a lot of statements about the adult characters that weren't intenteded for the anime which might lead someone to have a different view on the ones in the anime. This helps prevent cases like that.

Anyone can learn how to use psychic abilities. Magic is a separate thing entirely.

Psychics are shown easily levitating, and are expected to have foresight and outright teleportation. It's real in Pokemon for sure, it's just not seen as actually special since anybody can do it.

No, because he does a magician's trick for money. Avery casually levitates his entire team around his hat and actually sets weird Terrain on his own. Psychics got downplayed in the games because psychic powers don't really benefit your game mechanically, but they're a clear mystical presence that's just treated as mundane because Pokemon make it seem normal by comparison.

Hell no. They won't even say how Pokemon eggs come to be, whether or not they hunt each other, or if they can die in general. The PC storage and Pokeball technologies are mostly unexplained, and they change the cannon on the fly. It's all ambiguous as fuck.

Modern Weavile dex entries. It specifically lists their prey pokemon as well as the methods of hunting and killing them. You're right about PC storage, pokeballs, and eggs, but Pokemon absolutely kill and eat each other.

In the anime, there was one random filler episode in Johto where they met a witch that transformed Ash into a Pikachu. So apparently magic is a canon thing in the anime, at least. There also seem to be ninja clans in every region that can do obviously impossible shit.

I mean, think about it. You can excuse Fire/Water/Grass/etc as weird physiology, but many Pokemon do use actual magic, or magic-like abilities. And you can see Trainers training with their Pokemon by "pretending" to use their moves. Hell, Ash does it all the time.

So yes, humans can probably learn some Pokemon moves and especially psychic moves.

Because Japs that write these dex entries care more about getting into the next "TOP 10 CREEPY POKEDEX ENTRIES" list. It became more and more blatant with every gen being edgier than the other.

In official marketing or even the games, there's no mention of the food chain at all.

Again, these actually aren't canon rules of the pokemon world despite how they are phrased. It's guidelines for 3rd party merch makers to follow. A chunk of meat might be an acceptable accessory for monster figures from another franchise, but not Pokemon figures.

Pokemon are super weapons that can be wielded by a child. By framing them in the public's mind as a sport, and regulating that sport, they control the use of Pokemon and keep society going

Gym leaders seem to have a say over who their successors are and it seems like there's a degree of heredity to it. Falkner and Flannery explicitly inherited their gym from their fathers and Opal picked Bede to be her successor. Presumably the League just lets each gym do what they please with regards to who's running it.

How many children trainers do you think disappear every year in the pokemon world? They might get hunted and killed easily by a hungry wild pokemon, if they get ambushed or they are out of usable pokemon nothing can stop a pack of Weavile from ripping their throats out. Realistically many predatory mons would adapt to this and start actively preying primarily on human children just like it happened with indian tigers in real life: ghost or psychic pokemon using their powers to disguise as or reproduce the sound of people to lure them, bird pokemon grabbing trainers before they can react and dropping them from hundreds of feet to kill them, ground types hiding below roads waiting for a lone defenseless human infant to step over their maws.

I don't know how dojos worked in Japan, but I believe you could follow their logic as a starting point, as I believe they were the inspirations for the Gyms. Then, the secret techniques of the different dojos became the TMs.

As for how does one becomes a gym leader, adding on what >>44224147 said, I believe you start a gym, get it sanctioned once you have made it big and so long as the gym is working within the margins of the League's expectations, they are free to pick a successor of their own accord.

The League can also rescind Gym status in certain circumstances, like when Sabrina and the Psychic gym crushed the Fighting Gym and demoted it. It seems like the League is sufficiently hands-off that it allows gyms to pursue internecine rivalries and just acknowledges the state of affairs on the ground.
