Going to try a monotype with Pokemon Red.
I'm thinking about going Normal, Flying, or Bug since those are unrepresented by gyms/E4 and have enough mons to make a full team.

Normal seems the best defensively, Bug seems more diverse and easily accessable, and Flying has the most diversity along with strength and a deeper movepool but isn't as accessable early game.

Any recommendations /vp/?

Flying works well if you allow yourself pokemon that evolve into flying (like Charmander or Magikarp.) I'm doing that now in Let's Go Pikachu. (Go ahead, make the jokes, I enjoyed it.)

Bug would be interesting. Need to trade or hack in Pinsir though. Flying would be pretty easy, you get Charmander and early birds, then Gyarados plus legendary birds if you want them. Also even Fearow and Dodrio can wreck a lot of stuff.

Normal would be super easy once you got past Brock. Fighting is a non-issue, and both Clefairy and Water Gun are in Mt Moon to dab on the Geodude and Onix you'll encounter. You still get the early birds as well.

Another option is Poison, since Kanto has the most of them, but it would be easy bar dealing with Psychics. You can start with Bulbasaur and get a nido (or both) easily. Haunter and Gengar would wall a huge amount of stuff since a lot of foes just have Normal attacks, and they would make Koga literally free.

Even psychics are easy to deal with using poison. Since they have shitty defense. You can probably solo Sabrina with Venusaur. For extra keks Beedrill's twinneedle is SE to psychics.
