I'm so in love with Sugimori's promotional art for johto, the color palettes of the art and in game sprites, and the feel of Johto as a reigon. I seriously cannot stop geeking about it.

I'm partial to gen 3 in terms of in game aesthetic, but gen 2 definitely has the best art direction, and it has a really good traditional/historical vibe going on, makes the whole region come together, I just wish there was more of it. it's small, but what's there is fucking amazing, and they really make every tile of space count too, so it's size is partially made up for in density.

This image for Sword and Shield is cluttered
There's no real focus, there's empty space in the middle, and you can tell the artist had to cram as many Pokemon as possible
It's incredibly busy like a Where's Waldo picture
The one you posted has far more atmosphere and you can actually absorb everything all at once

Sugimori's older style was much more angular than any thing Toriyama put with starkly different proportions, but retards like you wouldn't know that because any Pokemon art that isn't incredibly safe, sanitized and round is a ripoff to you.

Also, in modern PKMN male PC has no male features at all. It's always some androgynous crap. In the old style, boys and girls were distinct, each gender had normal attributes and features. As it should be.

Johto's rural, tight-knit countryside vibe is a great contrast to Kanto's impersonal urban-industrial atmosphere.
It's too bad they kinda abandoned those general geographical themes for regions (I mean in terms of climate and landscape, not real-life country inspiration) starting with Kalos which pretty much looks like nothing at all. Alola feels like a Hoenn rehash and Galar is just whatever

Unova was not the best, but it was fine. It didn't have much of a geographical theme going for it, but at least it had seasons, and it was a memorable region overall. It all started becoming a clusterfuck with Kalos.

While Pineco wasn't my favorite as a child, I was completely intrigued by him. The combination of Pineco, Hoothoot and Sentret early on, along with the amazing nightcycle aesthetic built a perfect atmosphere of exploring the woods in the dark.

Breeding is fun and one of the central mechanics of the game, take it for what it is and try to enjoy the slower pace, they’re really excellent games if you play them as they were meant to be rather than treating them like a newer entry in the series.
