Unironically yes. The japs thought the story was too edgy so USUM rewrote it into a more straightforward monster of the week plot where every comes out OK.

Yeah I remember hearing/reading somewhere that the anime writers in particular couldn't bear to have a villainous mother character because they were afraid it would be "too grim" or "hit too close to home" for some people, possibly including some of the writing staff that didn't have the best relationship with their parents growing up.
