at this point i'd say it started as a coincidence but they're now embracing the idea. why no bear, bat or "unsuitable" fire starters like sea creatures (manta rays, turtles, etc) if that wasn't the case?

Either shift to a different zodiac like >>44250303 suggested, just do whatever maybe shifting the zodiac pattern to a different type, or drop the grass/fire/water starters and pick a new set of starter types to change things up after doing the same thing for probably 35 years by that point. If pokemon is still doing new things at all by then.

There are several alternate animals used in other Asiatic regions’ Zodiacs
House Cat and Elephant are two of my favorite alts (for Rabbit and Ox specifically)
I’d like to see the Western Zodiac touched on though. Be a bit weird to have a Fire-Aquarius though

You’re joking but mouse/rat is one of the most overused words in Japanese to describe an animal. Like hedgehogs and echidnas are just called spiky-rat or something to that effect. Like how we use Sea+Land Animal or Flying+normal animal here. The play on words only has to make sense in Japanese. Like Ampharos’s dragon typing or why a prehistoric version of Yanma wasn’t part dragon like it would have been in the literal Dragonfly pun worked in Japanese.

A lot of fakemon artists make this mistake. A lot of fans take localized names way to seriously. Sometimes they reference a vaguely similar animal in English because the name sounds better.

This is the same franchise that has a clam evolve into a chimera fish/mermaid and a deep sea lantern fish/gulper eel. They honestly just run with the visual elements.

Except GFW starters are the most intuitive set of types to teach kids the battle basics of Pokémon. Unless they decide to stop maiing the games for iids, they're not going to change the starter trio typings.

it's been 8 gens and the farthest they've strayed from it is also. everything else lines up almost perfectly. you may not like it but they're definitely doing it not. it's not a coincidence anymore

I've had this theory for a while that if the Gen 9 fire starter is a snake, then they'll just switch to western zodiac later, because the missing chinese zodiac signs (Ram, Ox, Horse) all have some kind of equivalent in the western zodiac (Aries, Taurus, Sagittarius) to make a smooth transition between the two

So it'd go like this
