Before Pokemon was being sold to the international market, the Americans took it upon themselves to redesign some of the species so that it could appeal to western audiences. One of these redesigns was Pikachu, who the Japanese designer described that it looked like "a tiger with breasts," and after showing their dislike for the retooled American designs, they simply ended the conversation with "I don't think you really know what you're doing."
Going by the tiger description, if pokemon was created by the Americans, a majority of the designs would look like something straight out of thundercats, considering this was the early 90s at the time.
