Because the games don't do enough to discourage it. If there were more doubles, triples or even rotation battles in the games, people would try to expand their team.

I still wonder why GF hasn't made a game that uses mainly uses doubles yet. It's the format they use for VGC so surely it would help to get more people interested/involved in competitive.

Gen 7 literally couldn't handle double battles half the time and it's a whole lot easier to introduce people to singles battling as a concept. Remember that most people still play on Switch style.

Personally, I like starting out with a weak Pokémon and watch it grow stronger over time. That was the main reason why I started with Ralts (and Barboach) in Alpha Sapphire.
