Gen 2 was my first Gen and it's still one of my favorites, but HGSS literally fixed a ton of issues and is a better overall package. Only nostalgiafag contrarians disagree.

I don’t see how shoving more forced tutorials, making the game linear instead of rewarding me for exploring, having worse music and sprites, and making saving slower is “fixing a ton of issues”.

it does not mess with the game, and yes it works with all battle themes

heartgold/soulsilver GOLDEN have this at the start, as well as restored game corner and lots of other soulful changes (kris over lyra)
