I heard that they did that because Grapploct was intended to be a a farm boy that wants to impress his mother but fails at doing so. So he goes and lives in a forest full of alolan Exeguttor and chops one down to make himself a fighting type. However, after doing so, a Darmanitan pops out of the stump and tells him it's wrong. He listens, and becomes friends with this Darmanitan. The other animals, mostly Teddiursa and Magikarp, warm up to him too. Everything is going smoothy until his family visits and convinces him to cull the rest of the Exeguttor to make more of the fighting he made and sell them for profit. Caught up in his own greed, he bursts out into a musical number doubting the Darmanitan's warning of him becoming bad. He even has a magical girl transformation sequence where his clothes turn green and he gets a top hat. Right before Grapploct can become a water type though, you can see the river being overran by smogulous smoke and schloppity schlop.
