Some of the big online retailers will probably sell Prerelease kits before the set drops so you can "have a Prelrelease at home", I know my locals were doing it for Rebel Clash and will be doing it for Darkness Ablaze too

Some people would say yes, but in my personal experience I always have better luck with the ETB whereas I always get 1 or 2 GX/V, but for the price some others prefer to take the risk with the blister packs.

I'm just rediscovering pokemon cards after 15 years or so and it's awesome that there's online play now, but what the actual fuck is up with the art style? What are these shitty ass, mid-2000s style vector ass looking avatars? I know they don't matter, and it's geared towards kids, but they look so bad it's triggering me. It's like a low grade flash dress up game some autist on deviantart threw up. They couldn't do, I don't know, pokemon style art? Generic weeb shit? Literally anything else? I'm already sick of looking at Erin from E-surance on every screen.

So you bait the opponent into playing multiple decidueye with your good non-V attacker and then surprise them with hoopa that maxes out at 130 damage with enough abilities? Because if they go solo decidueye, Hoopa only does 30 damage (or 80 for 3 energy).

I read the pastebin, it was very useful. if out of the starter theme decks the one i enjoy the most so far was fire, due to how easy it was to play (set up an arcanine with a special fire energy and steamroll everything, or set up snorlax and steamroll everything) which deck would i probably enjoy most from the recommended themes? i liked how beefy rillaboom looked but im interested in dragonite too because of tornadus and thunderus and that pidgeot. i dunno about dragonite himself though.
although the empoleon line of kyogres set looks dirty too.

play Dragonite if you want the best deck in the format - be aware games can get very close
play Charizard if you want to lose/win fast
Rillaboom is very good when it gets to setup an Eldegoss, but has no native consistency like the other decks so it can flop around.

The deck's main attackers are definitely the genies. The Dragonite is just there to be a mid game engine and very late game finisher. There's no reality where it takes all six prizes on its own. Instead you trade prizes efficiently and consistently until they run out of resources first.

Now Rillaboom though, it DOES win games on its own. Same as the deck's snorlax, and Maractus. Especially if you gt the turn 2 Eldegoss. The only problem is the still extremely popular Charizard/Nidoquuen deck feels something like 65-35 against it.

Maybe have a look at the Groudon one as well? Almost all of its cards can sweep if you're making the right plays with them.

A local store here had to move to a new location. The owner has a bit of a hoarding situation in his store, so when I visited the new place I asked if he found anything in the move. I stuck with it, just starting now. Its a little bit rough with the lame starting psychic deck that depends ENTIRELY on getting Gallade out and actually having the energy on the board, but after a few wins and many losses against the Intelleon deck, I managed to get my own Intelleon deck and I got a 10 win streak going. On about 400 coins. Wondering if I should grab a couple boosters, or another starter deck that solid.
That intelleon deck is disgustingly good for a beginner deck. The synergy is absurd.

You'll probably be playing the theme format for the next month so go ahead and buy some of the other good theme decks. Once the next set releases, spend your tickets to play theme events and you'll get enough packs to trade for cards to make a cheap deck.

Also, pay attention to when the contents of the next set's theme decks leak. You may need to save up 1000 coins to use them both in the events if they end up being good.

Charizard isn't fun at all. It's completely RNG with next to meaningful decisions whatsover. If you get heads off Timer Ball into a turn 3 Charizard or chain heads off Rapidash you win - if you hit tails instead you lose.

Anytime I play against the groundon deck they seem to lead groundon and get 3 energy down. You have to have an amazing start to stop a 130 hp, 130 damage attacker that can simply switch into throh if you can't ohko it by turn 3.

When you play the deck, your starts are never that good. Maybe I'm biased since I usually play against it with dragonite or kyogre and those decks have weaknesses to groudon.

Maybe sell the zeraora while it's ~13 packs, then rebuy it later since you should have a copy for expanded. That and boltund are the only really expensive cards in the deck. Or keep the deck if that's what you'll be playing in events when darkness ablaze releases.

Dragonite does well since it can stream attackers just as fast as charizard, so it's more luck based for whoever sets up first. The big threat in that match up is actually rapidash coin flips since you have multiple ways to get 100+ damage on the charizard.

You're welcome! Between my initial childhood collection and now (I'm 26), I bought the occasional tin or booster here and there but nothing too serious. I got severely sucked in at the beginning of the year and have been kinda just emptying my bank account on shiny cardboard. I think seeing the character cards from this set played a huge part in that. I have way more attachment to the various trainers in the series than I do most of the Pokemon themselves. In the last six months I've completed Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge, I'm most of the way done with Japanese Vending and VS series. I want to start working towards a master set of Cosmic Eclipse and then who knows what I'll ache for next.

Rillaboom deck you need to focus on getting your grassifleur out early. And filling the bench up with a Snorlax and grookey as main priorities. Then evolve it and start stacking up green energy on the bench. Sac it if you have to.
If you get a +6 energy on the board it's traded excellently. You want it on the snorlax first to deal with any threats, and then the rest put on grookey in prep for rillaboom. If you get lucky, Snorlax can basically solo the rest of the game by itself. But ideally leave him if he's out to soak up that damage and finish off what Eldegoss started. If you get a card to swap Lax out, then do that if Rillaboom is ready to sweep. Whimsicott is the weakest link in the deck. It CAN turn a match around, but the coin flip can screw you over too.
The Dragonite deck you want to try to get Dragonite on the bench asap. And have it dish out that energy to the genie lads. Trust me on this, if it's in the back wall, that 170 health it has let's it be very very sticky in a theme deck match. Then you want to get energy cards into the hand to use that ability.
I personally also like the Intelleon theme deck because it CAN get win streaks. The way to play that deck is to quickly shut down any threats. Getting Intelleon out as early as possible to snipe everything is great, but don't underestimate The Kingler + Cramorant strat of damaging the back row and having kingler come in and hit for heavy damage. Mantine out early is also good to get water energy in hand.
Drednaw I personally think is the weakest link in the team but it's still alright as long as you don't neglect it. It hit's like a truck and can be a good alternative in some situations to Intelleon and kingler.
Also don't be afraid to just put an energy on the mantine or cramorant and swing for 50/60 if the opponent doesn't have much on the board. You can win matches that way by just basics from getting any momentum.

Does anyone actually care about the state of meta?

Every big PTCG content creator I see just cracks packs and doesn't give a shit about the game itself. People that focus on the actual gameplay are tiny in comparison and they can really just regurgitate which netdeck is good or hype up every new revealed card that's actually trash.

There doesn't seem to be a unified front that clearly signals the meta is in a terrible shape, three-prize Pokemon are actively ruining the game, 90% of released cards are absolute garbage ala MTG and the game is probably at its most dumbed down and linear state ever.

That's basically the case. With EX, they've realized a true "chase card" for collectors. Then S&M introduced much rarer secrets, which is arguably a good thing. VMAX is just another card type in that line, it almost feels incidental that it's ruining the game.

The Magic reference was to the fact, that Magic has a specific class of cards (removal) that cause 95% of each set to be complete garbage. All of the game's balance revolves around removal.
EX/GX were already pretty degenerate, but most single-prize were still worth considering at least for fun, rogue decks. Tag Teams and VMAXes cause 95% of each set to be hot garbage. It's not going to end well.

I think once the SWSH block ends they should do a hard rotation to reset standard back. Vmaxes are arguably better than TTGXs but only marginally so. Still huge HP and damage output with few real draw backs. On top of that they now gatekeep 1 AND 2 prize decks. You know power creep is real when a card like Heatran GX which would have been a crazy good card prior to TTGX/VMax needs a crazy amount of energy on it to even survive. Needing 7 energy on a 50x attack to one hit KO something is bar none ridiculous.

Pretty much the case. TTGXs creating such a huge power creep forced this. All they needed to do was balance them better. Seriously, we went from 250HP Wailord being the biggest basic and the rest sitting at MOST 200HP to 240+ on all of them(with ridiculous damage output/game breaking GX attacks) and then blew 200 through the roof with the VMaxes. To make matters worse, the scaling on HP and damage for single prizers is still stuck in XY era which makes them completely unusable. Format sux gonna just play 2006, 2010, 2017 until this shit improves.

There's a difference between "subpar" or "suboptimal" and "literally unplayable".
In GX/EX years, yes, the game has degenerated with Big Basics and you could lose a Pokemon for free - but single-prize Pokemon could still hit for weakness and tank weaker attacks, they had valuable tech attacks and special conditions were still relevant because the game was slower. When Guardians Rising Alolan Vulpix came out, his free attack to put two basics in your hand was actually played.
Tag Teams and VMAXes warp the game completely around them - any other Pokemon either has to have an immediate effect, some sort of sidestepping gimmick or ridiculous OHKO-ing attack. Nobody gives a shit if you drop a bunch of resources to front ~120 damage 1-stage single-prize, when it's going to get tanked and then destroyed immediately.

I'm not saying that this didn't happen before in history, because I've been playing Magic for ~15 years instead. But the difference between the meta in XY/SM and now really makes me think of Magic, and how most of the cards in that game aren't "suboptimal", they're disenfranchised completely.

The card ends up having a 2-month lifespan instead of a 2-year one. All it has left are bad stage-2 accelerators like porygon-z (weak to marnie) or coalossal (need 2 of them in play).

20 is not so bad, but the stage 2 restriction is ass. 15 fighting types in discard is 300 damage, but that's still too little and you would still need the Machamp line in play, secondary Machoke/Machop to evolve, jirachis, Dedenne, etc.

If machamp was actually x40, it would be almost broken. If you spent a single turn setting up, you'd be looking at 200+ damage anytime you get the 2 energy into play.

why would that be so bad. Using an attack to discard 4 mons is not worth it atm, you have better ways to discard mons. Garchomp can also do 200 per turn if you play Cynthia the same turn for a single TAE attachment, this requires [F][C] or Black Belt + colorless.

In this theoretical scenario, it's an extra 160 damage on top of all your other discard sources and all you have to do is give up an energy attachment. I guess you could attack with baby zygarde for 20-50 damage and just let it get ko'd for the +40 damage and keep the energy.

eh, it's a stage 2 and that always requires significant investment in resources in both deckspace and evolving it, I would say 40 damage with a 240/280 cap would be reasonable if you are concerned about "infinite" damage.

Yeah but Marnie can also nuke the opponent if they have a really good hand. That's the issue with it, you can never tell if your forcing your opponent out of a game winning combo, or handing them the evolution or energy they need for game. I still like the disruption effect, and we do have Prof for hand resets too, but that comes with its own issue of discarding resources you might want to keep for later. Hopefully we get a reprint, or they change it like they did professors research and make some of the Champions into the shuffle draw 6 archetype. "Champions Discovery or something, though I expect a Cynthia reprint more than the Champion archetype idea.

TCG Player and Ebay really. I just recently got back into it too. I forgot how much I appreciated just the aesthetics of the cards. They're beautiful and have a lot of great artwork. Even the newer sets with the rainbow rares and full arts are amazing looking.

I think the problem now is that there are too many sets and too many variant rares from Sun & Moon onwards thanks to Japan

Yeah I guess that could be a problem if you're collecting whole sets. I've just been sniping single cards that I find really attractive. I am wanting to try and get a bunch of Neo series holos and other WOTC though. Only have a mint Steelix and Dark Charizard at the moment. Something I don't understand though is people paying literally 4 times the worth of a card on Ebay. It makes it super hard to win bids when retards do that shit. I can't figure out if it's some kind of bot and then they just don't pay or what.

The thing you have remember with old cards are that supply is limited and more recession proof since there's always a subtle decrease in supply through attrition, hoarding, and other factors. When the demand for them rises whether due to nostalgia ,the recent "stimulus", and what not the prices are going to spike

Yeah I understand that but for example you can find a near mint from a gold star seller on TCG for lets say $25 but then one on Ebay will sell for ~$40. Sometimes I don't even bother with bids anymore because there's a 99% chance they'll just way overshoot what it's worth. It just doesn't even make sense.

If you are talking about the discrepancy between the two platforms then perhaps it's due to eBay technically has a much wider reach for worldwide buyers, which means one could technically get away with jacking up the price since there's more chance of someone could bite. As someone who lives outside the US it is much harder to find someone from TCGplayer that is willing to ship to outside the US in a reasonable price.
