I gimped myself so I purposefully would have a more difficult against him without using items.
I used "meh" Pokemon to begin with and I docked their levels a bit to be way under his levels with a save editor.
Played it a few times, it was always pretty close each time. He always got me down to one Pokemon.

The anime also helped contribute to the idea that Sinnoh is the final and toughest league in Pokemon Japan.

Almost all the bosses in Galar have the strongest teams in the franchise, on-paper.
In practice it's the easiest game due to dynamax and EXP share.

You're talking about the anime, sure. Then again, Lance isn't exactly a champion there. Also, if we're talking about realism here, Cynthia's been pushed with a Mega since last gen. Sure, it's Battle Tree, but it's been put in Gacha Shit too, so that seems like the actual realistic answer. And yes, the anime has started with megas again.
