My senpai had jobs and I was always seen as lucky by being able to get gameboys and games / new consoles every christmas etc.
Me and my poor friend loved pokemon, but I had all the battle cards to go to the tournaments etc and the games to play, he had the pokedex toy and the garage store cards of clips from the show.
As soon as I got my copy of gold on GBC I gave him my previous copy of blue and a spare gameboy + battery pack that I had (the gameboy screen had a nasty scratch in it, though he really appreciated it).
After that we would play / trade / battle together until eventually we moved away. I still see him about and we always stop for a chat when we run in to eachother.
