Light and Sound are already used as prominent properties/features of several moves of multiple other types, not to mention abilities and already well-dual-typed Pokémon, and their addition would be the messiest possible of every popular new type idea. As for Cosmic, there’s nothing elemental about it. It’s just a classification regarding a Pokémon’s origin. Sure, a given Pokémon can be an alien from the cosmos/space but that doesn’t translate very well into any kind of elemental traits or powers. If anything Cosmic would be a cool Egg Group and/or Pokédex species classification.

This. Light magic is just Fairy type, and Light in nature is covered primarily by a handful of Grass, Fire, etc. moves. Solar Beam, Sunny Day, Flash Cannon, Flash, Solar Blade, Morning Sun, etc.

The only problem is figuring out how it interacts with other types.

Cosmic should be supereffective against Normal, Flying, Rock.

Weak to Ghost, Ice

Resists Fire, Ground

And Cosmic is resisted by Ice, Dark.

Sound is pretty obvious, you've got your Exploud, Noivern, -Puff, Kricketune and Seismitoad lines, plus weird one-offs like Chatot and Meloetta. The Zubat line could probably also be changed to Sound/Flying instead of Poison/Flying since it literally starts as a blind creature that needs to echolocate to see. I'm sure there are plenty more too.

It's still not a great idea though since this type would pillage a lot of Special Normal moves, and these types work just fine as they are honestly.

Cosmic though I really don't see it working. the number of Pokemon and Moves that seem to insist on being of that type is more limited than for Sound, because Sound is a physical effect rather than a point of origin.

Also Ice needs to resist something, either Water or Flying, and Rock could use another resistance, too, but not something it would share with Ground, since those types are already too similar.

Honestly, for the sake of round numbers, I'd really like to have only 16, but at this point I don't know which I'd cut. Fairy seems obvious, but I like the niche will it fills, although, again, it's too strong.

There’s no good reason for this, and several good reasons not to do this. Light has no place as a type and even trying to do so would just lead to messes and shitty half baked retcons, and lack thereof in some places. And for the record, Sound is almost as bad as Light for mostly the same reasons.

And this is part of the problem. Holy/Bless magic, as Light is often classified in other JRPGs, is well covered by the Fairy type. Considering that Dark is actually the Evil type, its counters already exist in Fairy and Fighting. Light as a thing in nature is already used as prominent properties of moves of multiple other types like Fire, Grass, Psychic, Electric, and Bug. There’s no need nor room for it as a type.

Well if you include anything from Plastic to Rubber or Synthetic, then on top of Voltorb, Trubbish, and Porygon, there’s also potential for Ditto, Grimer (same logic as Trubbish), Reuniclus, Donphan (rubber tire), and Wobbufett (rubbery punching bag joke). Even Pokémon based on dolls like Banette and Stufful could potentially work. And for a few further stretches, Pokémon with rubbery parts like Tangrowth’s vines or Licklicky’s tongue could be argued. That’s already a pool of possibly 12 Pokémon lines, more than the Fairy type ended up getting pre-Gen 6.

Unless you’re also gonna argue for more dual-typed moves, then Light would be a massive mess. People try to justify new types by showing off how a ton of Pokemon or Moves, usually of a single type, could fit the new type. But I feel like that's not really the important part of a new Type: those Pokemon clearly weren't having a problem before that new Type exists. What should be important is the new concept space a new Type brings in, a place to make new monsters in. Steel, Dark and Fairy all made a new "type" of monster when they appeared that could be made, a new trait to design with. A new Type should focus on what new monsters it can bring in that would be much harder before, instead of something that's already in the game.
