You're not wrong, they're basically DLC Pokemon but in the dumbest fucking way possible

Blame Morimoto and whoever was making decisions for the movies up to and around M4. If he hadn't added Mew, then the movie makers not used it for M1, they wouldn't have made Celebi and get it yeeted from the series for a movie.

That's the legend but I haven't seen evidence of it. Even if Mew was good advertisement for Japan at the time. It's not needed now. A lot of kids aren't knowledge on the existence of events. Most random people off the streets don't know what a mythical is.
