This concept has been floated around this board for a couple weeks now in various threads. Would this spice up the next game, or would it be another misstep?
>Regional Dex contains 450 Pokemon
>100 of them are brand new, and include the new game staples-- starters, electric rats, birds, normal type, early bugs, psuedo, trio- and box legendaries. Every instance of the game contains these Pokemon.
>Up to 30 Pokemon from previous generations can be registered at the start of a new game and are added to the player's Regional Dex. A pokemon's evolutions are automatically added to the list; so if you register Wartortle, Squirtle and Blastoise are registered as well. You can choose to register less than 30, or even zero if you want a completely fresh game. Regional variants are counted, but Legendaries are excluded.
>The remaining 320-350 Pokemon are randomly drawn from prior gens. Considerations are made to both typing and BST, but they are not designed to be 100% balanced. It is entirely possible to roll a dex that is heavy in one type (like Kanto's poison types) and light in another (Hoenn's fire types), and you can have a regional dex whose total BST is higher or lower, but you will never be completely shut out of a type or deprived of good BST mon.
>The 100 new Pokemon have predetermined catch locations, but the rest are distributed across the game based on type (so you won't catch a Slugma while surfing) and BST (you won't catch a psuedo-legendary in Route 1). Starters are always obtained from NPCs as quest rewards.
>Opponent trainers all have fixed teams independent of your dex, so you can still strategize and plan ahead for encounters.
>the national dex still exists, and any Pokemon can still be obtained via trading or visiting other players' regions.
The end result is that every player has a unique game experience, while still being sure that their favorite boys are in the game.
>inb4 GameFreak would never be able to do it correctly.
