Because some moves are so powerful that they even damage your own team members. Moves like earthquake would be too OP otherwise.

Attacking your teammate can be useful in situations where you need to proc weakness policy, berries, etc.

so you can play online 2v2s and kill your teammate to be a dick online
so you have one of your pokemon knock out the other then kill the enemy next turn or have them die to poison/burn/leech seed/etc at the end of the turn anyways and dab on them

One time on showdown I used trick room and this guy used his prankster klefki to paralyze his own ally Pokémon so it could beat my pokemon. He won btw because of it. It was so smart
