By popularity among normies and casualfags where you live, this doesn't include contrarian veepee or plebbit circlejerks. Also Gen 8 is still ongoing so it's hard to gauge popularity until the region has passed.

gen 1 and 2 pokemon was everything. every saturday morning kids channel, every magazine, every bus side and spaghetti shape and piece of kids clothing. people who didn't experience pokemania can't imagine how all encompassing it was, no trend has come close since.
gen 3 it tapered off. it was stillm popular, but it wasn't every kid on the playground playing, mostly the nerdier kids and you might get looked down on for it.
every gen after that has been pretty much exactly equivalent. steady popularity with little kids and die-hard older fans. low media and merch presence. casual interest with people buying cute toys. not even the nerd groups spend all day enthusing about it now. there's cooler nerd franchises. seen as something for little kids mostly.

This, pokemania pretty much had every young boy by the balls in gen 1 and 2. Gen 3 is where the shift happened where the old fans were getting older and new fans were just starting the series. I see so many young 20 somethings these days saying how ruby and sapphire were their first games

outside plebbit and veepee, I haven't seen anyone talk about gen 5. I would place gen 5 last as well with gen 6 or gen 7 any place above it due to how normies went crazy over alola starters and greninja

This is pretty accurate I'm 22 and my first game was emerald, I became obsessed with Pokémon but literally no one else in my school was interested in Pokémon even at that young of age, Gen4 is when I noticed people picking the games up again.. maybe 1, 2, 4, 6, 3, 7?
