Kricketune and Lickilicky had better designs than their final and we only have their backsprites to judge.
Rampardos, Vesbiquen, and the Abomasnow family were all better. In fact, while not all are hits (hipowdon for example) really a lot of these early designs feel like they avoided many of Gen 4's pitfalls, which was having toylike designs, or "IT GETS ROUNDER AND SIMPLER". It's a shame they scrapped that.
