It still has shitty rng mechanics, the designs have less soul than even the newest gens and to top it off, it forces online connectivity, which only serves to limit the potential playerbase by being reliant on a server to be able to play the game.
They should have had an offline mode to attract as many players as possible, but then it would have been even more evident that the game is even more hollow than an actual pokemon game. They added a shitton of dialogue to hide the fact that the game if laughably empty even in comparison to SwShit and XY.
It also didn't help that idiots thought it was a pokemon killer and were very vocal about it, because people who sincerely bought into that mindset were very disappointed when the end product was worse than pokemon, and ultimately didn't buy it.
While the trannyshit is annoying, it didn't really seem to affect the success (or lack thereof) of the game, because the people so vocally opposed to it were never going to buy it, anyway. It did end up attracting lot of pedo larpers, but that only became evident if you interacted with the degenerates.
