1. you don't get a job designing Pokemon without being demonstrably superior to 99% of designers for this genre
2. often designers will convey emotions other than 'cool' and will deliberately make something stupid looking to convey humour. That is why vanilluxe just becomes a bigger ice cream. Obviously it's stupid and that's the joke. I guess japanese people understand this but lots of people on 4chan seem to think the designers just made a mistake. pretty dumb honestly.
3. Seasoned designers are familiar with perfection, which is easy to achieve since the materials and the results are uncomplicated in this case; so, pokemon designs often actively elide an obvious framework in pursuit of something more profound. I'm referring to imbalance of colour, strange proportions, garish evocations of ugliness. Things like obstagoon are made to be ugly
