I actually kinda enjoyed the seedy setting, the mini sidequests scattered around, and the fact that you have to start with shitmons. But the game runs like ass to the point of it being unbearable.

it's dogshit.
the only cool thing was having a limited selection of pokemon, having them join you in various ways, exploring a huge city.
but all of that goes out of the window once you reach the third gym.
that said, if you did hate the beginning of the game, sorry but you have shit taste.

Probably the most honest review of the game I’ve seen on this site. However, the first gym leader is the epitome of what people hate about the game. If I’m remembering correctly, almost all her Pokemon simply spam charge beam which is powered by the field. Would have been nice if there was a little more room for strategy, but otherwise up to third or fourth gym the game is alright.
