I think it would work without being a stealth sequel, but I suppose that is what it could come down to. My idea was keeping Plasma as antagonist, by simply having this take place in an alternate Universe Unova. All the same characters, similar mannerism, but some differences as well.
The reasoning is because these would simultaneously act as Unova "remakes" and sequels at the same time. A way to feel fresh, and also wrap up the Tao Trio storyline. It's why I wanted the OD on the left to be Fire/Dragon & the Kyurem complete Electric/Dragon, as it fits the trilogy typing, themes, and original mascot types of B/W.
Different universe means needed megas/formes for the starters, regional American themes variants, and improving the NYC themed region.
I think Cynthia could play a small part as she is in Unova studying the subject, your idea just expands on that. A Cyrus cameo in the distortion world when the OD is complete would also be welcome.
