Exactly this. Red & Gold look strait out of some old school Akira era anime, while Rosa/Selene look the way the medium does today.

Otherwise Gen 5 & 7's art would resemble that era if it were made then.

You’re right about gold, but gadgets and gear aren’t in fashion anymore, though I miss seeing characters actually decked out for adventures instead of a standard walk in the city.

This is what I hate about the current designs the most. Even with the customization your character will at best look like they're ready for a trip to the mall and not an adventure around the region. Though it's probably fitting considering the current state of the series now anyways.
