When the opponent is switching from something your Pokemon beats to something that walls your Pokemon, in 90% of scenarios you're not gonna make any progress.
One way to actually capitalize on that turn is to double switch. But if the opponent has something that walls the thing you're doubling to, then there's almost no point.
Spending that turn setting up hazards used to mean you're at least forcing progress. Because either their repeated switches get chipped down or you are forcing their defogger to come in and stop their momentum meaning you have time to force something to happen.
But HDB pretty much made that irrelevant.
People love spouting "just use knock off" but pretty much everything single thing that can actually use knock off can't beat Toxapex/Clefable, neither of which mind losing their item too much. There's Bisharp and Rillaboom but those can't break body press Corviknight, who doesn't necessarily like loosing it's leftovers but whatever.
