It's just that Gardevoir is a magical, psychic take on the concept. An empath blob that takes a more humanoid shape the more it trains/evolves to protect those it bonded with. It fights with psychic blasts and force fields rather than swords and shields.
Gallade is an attempt to bring the line back to its original vision after the "reception" towards Gardevoir became impossible to ignore.
