Honestly, Pancham should've been the "Gen 5 Lucario" as it fits the mascots better aesthetically, fits the whole Black/White Yin/Yang motif better, is a fighting type just like Rio/Luc are, has an ACTUAL unique method of evolving (Coro Coro lied about Zorua having one) and has a superior design both before and after evolving.

I would've scrapped both Zorua & Cubchoo to have the superior Panda, and it would've worked.

Team Preview ruins the gimmick, which is "useless" against ingame AI anyway, and it was really annoying to get before BW2 (which dropped one in you lap) since it required a Shiny Event Gerbil or Event Celebi, and first impressions matter, and the fact Zoroark was a blatant attempt of trying to repeat Lucario gave it a colder reception to start with.

On the contrarian, Zoroark didn't enough. You guys seriously underestimated how bad Lucario shilling was in it's hayday. Gamefreak just did everything they can to sabotage Zoroark with their stupid decisions. And being cucked by Greninja and demoted to a poke assist in Smash isn't noteworthy effort, either. Still, Zoroark is popular and managed to make second place in the voting polls, only beaten by an oddball like Chandelure.

I think its disguise gimmick was part of the problem. It has a really distinctive design but spends most of its time looking like something else. The illusion gimmick is also pretty much just Ditto's but worse - not from a gameplay perspective, obviously, but just in terms of what its powers amount to conceptually.

Lucario has a more universal appeal, this was designed for furfags. You have to go through retarded hoops to get this in BW, and it's just kind of shit. Its movie was really boring, Lucario's was fun. Lucario got into Smash, Zoroark didn't. No memorable trainers have Zoroark, Cynthia has Lucario.

It would've been introduced one Gen earlier as the new Riolu-esque shillmon in my world. I likely would give it a different ability to make it better. Seriously, Kung-fu panda should have debuted then and represented Unova anyways.

Zoroark itself would have been godly in Gen 4, perhaps they could have introduced it as a pairing for Riolu which evolves via happiness at night.

2 reasons: one, it being locked behind an event in BW. And not just any event but a breadcrumb one that required Zorua, who you only got by bringing over Celebi from HGSS, who you only got by getting a Special Pichu from another event. Compared to Lucario in DPP who was straight up given to you as a Riolu by Riley in game and it's just a complete hassle.

Two, Team Viewer. Gen 5 was the first generation that had this feature for PvP and in doing so Zoroark's major niche of appearing as another Pokemon on the team was not quite the same since now everyone will know you have a Zoroark and just play appropriately to scout it out. The feature slowed down the momentum it had, as well as the one of the then massively hyped Imposter Ditto.

It's the victim, not the hero character in its movie, which makes it much less "cool".
It's also locked behind an event, and once you get it, it's not even that good competitively, as its own Illusion gimmick is ruined by Team Preview, which was introduced in the exact same generation.

Design is tight though. Like a SSJ3 dark fox spirit. They need to either give it more defense+special defense, or speed and attack+special attack. Otherwise it's only really good as a clean up sweeper.

Back in Gen 5, it was actually really strong if positioned correctly, but these days it doesn't hit hard enough or have the movepool to justify it.

Illusion is the coolest ability in the game though. The mind games it sets up are really cool.

Gen 5 had a fucking ton of great designs, especially for Dark types.

Krookodile, Bisharp, Druddigon, Jellicent, Gothitelle, Scrafty, Golurk, Stoutland, Liepard, Darmanitan, Braviary, Mandibuzz, Galvantula, Reuniclus, Whimsicott, Haxorus, Volcarona, Hydregion, and Chandelure lines. All fucking great.

If Zoroark had a secondary typing like Ghost, it would have been a great offensive mon, like how Spiritomb was threatening back in DPPt days despite being defensive. There would be no way to SE hit it til gen 6, which would have helped Illusion, and it's low defenses out.

the formula was generic and abundant already in pokemon. The last three movies before zoroark's had some variation of villainy with zoroark's storyline being overdone. It's probably why people liked lucario's movie more due to how it broke the usually pokemon movie formula that aided to lucario's already high success. Like unfezant, zoroark had too big of a shoe to fill.

Just because Gen 5 had mostly shit designs, doesn’t mean you have to rip ome of Gen 6’s design.
Yes, Zorua failed, as did the starters, but Japanese players were more amused with Chandelure, who as a result stood as Gen 5’s main representation.
