Ok, /vp/, we all know the plot of pokemon games is... uninspired. You're put in charge of writing the next game's story. Sure, you COULD do 8 gyms, an evil incompetent "team" and a legendary after the sixth gym, but what ELSE? Throw out the formula altogether?

I'd just return to the old format. They tried to shake it up in Gen 7 and 8 and it doesn't work.

8 gyms - yes, but challenge them in any order, and have the Pokemon/levels scale based on the badges you do have.

Evil team - yes, but make them competent and not a fucking meme team like Skull or Yell. I'd model them after African animal poachers.

Legendary after sixth gym - Yeah, but instead, 4th gym. And it has nothing to do with the plot. You just find it, battle it, can't catch it, then get tidbits about it as you continue on your journey.

Battle gimmick - some Sudden Death styled stuff where you have 3 turns, boosted power, and the one with the least HP by the end of it loses

Looker - add Looker back in

Alright, I phrased it wrongly. Essentials is a laggy and non-portable piece of garbage and no one should waste their time on games made in Essentials or other RPG Maker libs.
If you think you have enough energy to work on a fangame, just work on your own IP (but don't use Essentials or RPG Maker). If you just want an altered Pokemon experience, rom hacks are the way to go.

That's one of the issues with writing for mainline pokemon if you ask me, you can't really write the pokemon themselves into the story much because you're not allowed to force to player to use any particular mons.

Make it a two part game. Half from the perspective of the typical protag and half from the perspective of a Team Whatever grunt. So often, the reasoning for the antagonist team showing up in a particular location is a flimsy justification for "we needed enemies in this area". Having to write from their perspective should help address that.

Given that you can niw access the PC from anywhere, you kinda could do that. Make the Day Care accessible from anywhere too, give it like 4 slots for pokemon so some of your out of party pokemon can keep up with your team, then you can just give the player story related pokemon.

As for the gameplay, I'd just go full gen 3 with a wide, explorable region with many points of interest (and possibly way less water). Story wise, I would try to carefully spread the plot throughout the game (not like XY that dumps all plot in a single section doing a very poor job of it, for example), and show more nuance in the various NPCs's emotions and reactions. Work more with subtleties instead of slapping a cutscene every 2 minutes in the player's face, saving those for the true "climax" scenes.

Player and rival are childhood friends, but they are taken away by a cult who believes he is their reincarnated leader. They're spiritual warriors/monks who think your friend is meant to summon the Pokemon that will unify the Earth. Slowly your friend becomes more brainwashed into being loyal and actually guiding them. Some conspiracy theorists, spying, temples, dungeons, etc. questioning whether or not you're doing the right thing by stopping them throughout the game and other moral grey areas. But not so much narrative outside of that.

Experimenting with a machine or time related Pokemon causes the Player to travel to different periods in the past. The towns are instead time periods of different eras. Primordial ancestors of certain Pokemon, species that went extinct, the Gym leaders are emperors and warlords. You battle your own parents. Last chapter is going to the future. I don't know lol.

That's what I thought. I imagined an entirely primitive game, but that would be cutting back on a lot of technological staples. Plus time travel gives an excuse to do plenty of shit.
