All 3 gen 5 starters have weird level-up movepools. Serperior gets barely any coverage and depending on when you evolve it Pignite can go a while without a fighting move.

I recently did a LG nuzlocke and was surprised to learn how uniformly awful most level up movepools were back then. I think TMs were more supposed to supplement movepools but some are just like not usable.

Bug pokemon have like no STAB lol and the best poison move is like sludge or acid for these pokemon. You get the sludge bomb TM post game in the rocket hideout.

maybe it wouldnt be so bad if razor shell always gave a defense drop instead of 50% chance of it happenning, especially after liquidation became a move. Saddest thing is that is the most usable of the gen 5 starters signature moves, who uses heat crash or coil?

razor shell was considered a competitive move for cloyster and samurrot as a physical water attack during gen 5, but it was always recommended next to waterfall. Coil I can see but im pretty sure no one ever used heat crash on emboar when flare blitz was available.

Not only an egg move, but it had to be chain bred - breeding the move onto a pokemon that can breed with Sneasel. That move tutor in Platinum was the biggest QoL change Sneasel could have asked for.

Imagine busting your ass with Sneasel in Diamond only to find out its best ice move was fucking ice shard at lvl 49, and Weavile doesn't even learn it.

To be fair Empoleon is a Water type and therefore gets Surf.

For some reason Pangoro gets Low Sweep at level 70 in gen 6 despite being an early-mid sort of move. This is after Hammer Arm and Sky Uppercut, and is its last level up move.

Cacnea's level up movepool is abysmal until ORAS. Nice Needle Arm at around level 40 and a level up movepool full of support and status moves they will never be able to use due to their slow frail mixed attacker meme stats.

Honestly Samurott's level up in general is kinda weird, it learns a lot of Physical Moves and fuck all for Special. I'd say Water Sport, Aqua Jet, Encore & Retaliate could be dropped in favour of Roar, Night Slash, Brine & Foul Play respectively. Also I find it kinda weird it can't learn Iron Head but it can learn Iron Tail even though Samurott's head crest is a lot more imposing than its flat fan-like tail.

Yeah Smart Strike is good although I just find it weird that it really doesn't get that many Special Moves and gets a pretty shit hand dealt when it comes to level-up type variety. Bug, Normal & Water and one Fighting-Type move in Revenge.

Cause Dark Type didn't exist in Gen II? And yeah I'm aware they retroactively gave Magneton the Steel-Type in Gen II but they didn't replace a type to do so, that wasn't something that did until Fairy-Type so it's entirely possible that their philosophy back in Gen II was that a Pokemon's types were not to be changed by introducing new types.

As for Poison-Type moves I could see it learning via Level Up; Poison Gas (especially with Gastly), Poison Jab, Sludge, Toxic Spikes, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave (Gengar only), Clear Smog & Smog.

Well I think another factor is that they had a whole 'remaster' of the games where they could easily have fixed it, either by moving Shadow Bone up a single level or just making it a learn-by-evolution move. The starters got secondary moves, and Kommo-o got Close Combat. But Alolan Marowak didn't get his Shadow Bone problem fixed.

Articuno has the same Special as Moltres, Blizzard has 90 accuracy, more than Fire Blast, and is a far better offensive type.

while I'm sure evil Gengar's can and do exist this might be the pokedex streching the truth. Gengar's shown in the ashime/detective pikachu that they have has a more mischievous side to them rather than outright evilness. Sneasel's for example are known to eat pidgy eggs like a real wild animal and their dark typing reflects this.

Fire Blast was a gym leader specific TM, in Gen 1 no Pokémon can naturally learn a move that is taught by a gym leader TM (the exception being Yellow’s Pikachu learning Thunderbolt).
