I used it a shit ton back when I cared more in the BW era. I wasn’t that great, but I made two top 16 placements with a Wide Guard Torterra.

What? It was used everywhere during gen 6 and 7.
Now it doesn't see use anymore because of the metagame changing with gen 8.

It's even better these days because you can spam it. I think it's the only Protect move that doesn't fail when used repeatedly.

I think every "protect" move except Detect and, well, Protect can be spammed

King's shield, baneful bunker, spiky shield and obstruct can't be spammed. Crafty shield can, and I'm not sure about mat block (I think it works like fake out or something)

Follow Me and Ally Switch completely outclass it, especially when Dynamax has a chokehold on things because Wide Guard is pretty fucking bad when you factor that you can just dynamax a random mon and wide guard just does nothing, compared to Follow Me and Ally Switch redirecting the bigass attack to a resist

Yeah, you might protect both of your mons from a spread move, but you might also waste a turn.
