>>44392148I mean, she's been shaped by years of what's effectively abuse by her family, so it's not surprising that her behavior is problematic.
Born into a clan that she's supposed to have pride in and carry on the traditions of, she is constantly treated by her family as second-best. It doesn't matter how accomplished Clair becomes as a trainer, because she'll never be as good as Lance. She becomes such a skilled Gym Leader that hardly anyone can manage to pass the Blackthorn Gym, which she wants to take pride in but she's stuck on the fact that she's treated as being just not good enough. So some preteen wonder-kid comes in out of nowhere and takes her down, and she snaps because she can't handle being reduced even further- to being less than a child. From a professional standpoint, her behavior at this point is completely unacceptable, but it's entirely understandable. Desperate to maintain some sense of self-worth, she insists to herself that surely this mere child couldn't handle the trials of her prestigious clan and sends the young trainer into the Dragon's Den. And when all is said and done, her clan elders reprimand her (rightfully) and threaten her with Lance (who they have given her a complex about).
Honestly, her family is bad for her mental health and she should leave them behind. It's cool if she wants to continue training dragons, since that's what she likes, but she needs to escape this trap of being expected to uphold the family's reputation while constantly being belittled for not being the absolute best trainer in the family.
