Talking purely on the design I actually prefer GMax in general, most of them are a lot more imposing (exceptions being the ones that add more stupid theme shit like the skyscraper and drumkit garbage)
The problem is the size change completely ruins the entire gimmick. DMax is designed with slow turn-based combat in mind where the Pokemon only have to stand there stationary and stare at each other, with no movement or complex animations required. Having a more dynamic fight in another medium (try to imagine DMax in Pokken or the anime for example) is basically impossible.
They don't even fit on-screen, you have to zoom out so far that you can't even see the action anymore. The only solution is to make every battle Dmax vs Dmax, but then the relative scale doesn't even change so what's the point of having the size change at all? It's boring and pointless.
