They kinda tried with the little events you get with Diancie, and I think Volcanion, but it really doesn't compare with the gen 3 & 4 mythical events, since those have actual locations for the mons

At least we still get some lore or story. And then we have zeraora which has nothing. Marshadow also dont but at least its pokedex entry provide something. Zeraora's dex only talks about its moves, no lore or anything

if I recall correctly, you can actually edit your position onto the island without the pass or dlc installed. you won't be able leave without the pass either, but i think it was possible
