FRLG improved literally everything from the originals and yet kept everything important exactly the same. It totally nailed the Kanto atmosphere and added a lot of content at the same time, despite complaints about locking you into the original 151 Pokemon until post-game, I think this and the other autistic Jap choices to keep the games almost unchanged served it well. HGSS are basically reinterpretations rather than remakes and a lot of the choices made in that transition hurt the feel of the games.
