My initial reaction wasn't much, I remember thinking "Oh, that's cool" and that's it. It wasn't until actually using them in game and seeing all the designs besides those promoted that I started to really like it.

Thought they were a terrible idea that sent pokemon on the digimon direction. Thought that almost all of the designs looked terrible. Thought that the mons that got them were either already too powerful(and got them for shilling purposes) or could've used a regular evolution instead. Thought the lore surrounding it was mightly stupid(mewtwonite, really?). I hope they never come back.

I honestly feel like it's the most consistent of the bunch that they've put out.

They'll come back. Probably sooner than anyone expects. I know people want to say that they were culled for good but looking at merch, the phone game that has plagued the main line games, side games and such, Megas are far from gone. I know Z-moves really were effectively scraped and Dynamax seems to be heading that way just because of how it was presented as a Galar thing only.

I like them because I like digimon. It can also be used to help make shitmons more competitive

I know some anon gave it some thought and pointed out that since Mewtwo is a clone of Mew meant for battle and Mew supposedly having the DNA of all Pokemon, Mewtwonite wasn't really much of stretch.

I think it is pretty neat.
I might not agree with some of the mega evolution designs, Salamence looks just plain awful, but I don't hate the concept.

I laughed my ass off because the digimon comparisons had been building for years beforehand.
These days I don't really mind them, they're a mechanic like any other. I personally liked the idea of Z-moves more. Having a one time nuke at the cost of an item that could be more useful long-term appeals to me more. Plus it gave more pokemon a much needed situational power boost than the megas did.

On the Digimon train, it didn't feel like a Pokemon-flavored thing. That Lucario and Mewtwo were a part of the reveal lineup already told us it wasn't going to be purely mechanically minded, and indeed it is a perfect display of Game Freak's split priorities when creating Pokemon in microcosm.

The idea that it doesn't occur in the wild, going so far as Rayquaza needing human help to transform, was an expected but appropriate drawback, and it opens the interesting question of how bad guys can still create Pokemon relationships that allow for it to happens. The last XY movie even exploring bad guys trying to deliberately get around the it. Didn't ORAS retcon where the stones came from? I don't remember.

They live on spirit with Gigantimax, so we know creating extra Pokemon designs isn't the problem. The only genuine headache is the need for so many individual stones, and you can work around that.

I remember seeing the leaked movie poster for the Genesect and Mega Mewtwo Y movie and thinking “that looks like the stupidest thing ever, he’s got a lunch box handle on his head.” (this was before we knew the Mewtwo in that film was a different one than the original).
I liked most of them in the actual games they appeared in though. That said, I really disliked Mega Manectric’s design. Was really hoping Feraligatr would get one in Gen 7 but instead all we got in terms of megas were a bunch of dex entries retconning mega evolutions from being cool power-ups unlocked by the bond you share with your Pokémon, to a horrific bloodthirsty transformation that more often than not outright hurts the Pokémon and sometimes even trainers (mega Gengar trying to kill everything around it including its trainer, that thing about Mega Salamence cutting people in half). Seriously don’t understand why they did that.
I’d like to see them come back but I hope they change it back to being a positive thing for the Pokémon rather than painful mutilation.

Well, GameFreak being GameFreak started excessively giving them to Kantomons and shillmons. I was sad my favorite Flygon never got a Mega but in retrospect, the competition for the mega slot was already pretty intense in ORAS so unless it was completely amazing it likely wouldnt have helped much. Also, a lot of the mega designs were pretty crappy in retrospect.
