I don't see how it was a downgrade when they actually took the game contests and improved them in a visual sense while staying true to them. Hell, anime contests were really just more arbitrary battles.

Being true to the games is not a good thing. The whole point of a video game adaptation is that it's free of the restrictions video games have. They're able to show what things are actually like.

Contests were already game-accurate. The first round was a performance stage, like the games. The battle stage is just something they added onto that. And even those are different from regular battles in that they had a time limit and the goal was to lower your opponent's points by handing hits or pulling off stylish moves, not necessarily KO their Pokemon.

Again, more arbitrary battles because the first stage was usually glossed over as well. Especially in May's case where it was almost always KOs.
