One image is rookie Ash who was so dumb/bad that even the viewer wanted to smack him.

The other is Ash after supposedly maturing after several regions, especially coming off the Sinnoh anime it felt jarring. X&Y should have followed after Sinnoh anime-wise, as Ash's competence is more fluid that way.

DP Ash is absolutely nothing like XY Ash and people only make the comparison out of "competence". DP Ash was a planner who spent most filler episodes sitting around coming up with specific strategies to use in upcoming battles, while XY Ash was the sort who liked to go into fights blind and play it by ear when he could. They were very, very different characters. XY Ash is more akin to BW Ash, except with the stupidity toned way down..

You can't even come up with a specific example in DP Ash's case (hell, the only one I can think of was when he decided to try entering a contest for fun). Even in the first blasted gym he was training with Brock before the gym to practice going against Rock Pokemon.

I didn't list the DP example because you sound as if you watched DP, but I guess not. Conway he was pretty much winging it. Paul calls Ash out on how his overall strategy isn't really so much strategy but what feels right.

As for the rock training, it seems kind of dumb when you realize he did rock training last gen as well when trying to get Iron Tail working. Crasher Wake also wasn't exactly a strategy meeting either.

It was a god damn plot point that Ash opted to focus on getting Infernape ready for his match with Paul instead of preparing for Conway, which is why he was so unprepared in that specific battle.
