>>44428902I usually do a mix of both. I play the singleplayer blind, so I don't know exactly how useful the mons I catch are gonna turn out, and I can't commit time to level every pokemon. Because of that, I like to use a tried and true mon that I know how to train properly and will have good performance over the course of the game. Alakazam is a pretty good example of this, because I know I can count on his speed/raw power and movepool to carry even a floundering team of shitmons through the game and postgame.
