Everyone was surprised about hearing of Manaphy at the end of SM. And Ash was pretty suprised about seeing a Jirachi in BW. Can't be something that happens a lot.
Then again, this other guy had a fucking Darkrai, so what do I know

Because her friends are use to seeing legendaries. Ash rode on a Solgaleo to god knows where. Lillie has her Magearna. Kukui used a Tapu Koko in battle. Lana fished out a Kyogre.

After all they seen, Mallow owning a Shaymin isn't that unusual.
