At the end of the day, it's still in-game Pokémon, so you don't need to be clever as if you're battling against another person irl. The tedium is really the only hurdle. You're either grinding doing the prep-work (hatching eggs, EV training) or grinding the seemingly endless, boring (and slow if doing gen 4), and mostly mindless battles until you get unlucky with RNG and start all over. The worst part of it is that if you just inject the perfect mons, then the battles/victories feel even less substantial, like a waste of time.
Honestly, the Frontier is overrated. It just highlights how broken a lot of the "competitive" game-play is under intense stress, even when adjusting as much as possible for the RNG. No one even really likes playing any of the facilities that aren't the Tower or Factory, anyway. If it weren't for the aesthetics in presentation, the Frontier would be as ignored as the Battle Maison or whatever was in gen 7.
