>What's the inspiration?If it's just a thing with no basis at all, it will probably look like a mess. An animal, a myth, an object, something has to ground it enough that it can be identified with.
>How does it fit in?It needs to have some aspect relating it to its habitat, other Pokemon, or human society. That builds it into the world.
Its visual design matters too, and a lot of fakemons often don't capture the art style right in the line work and proportions, or they're loaded with unnecessary details, poor color choices, etc.
