Back then there was nothing to compare.
Almost every game was a move to right scroller or basic RPG.
There was nothing like Pokemon on the Game Boy, nothing on the GB came close to the extensive exploration Pokemon achieved in a handheld.

...except Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire the Mana games, the Terranigma/Illusion of Gaia games, Ultima, tons of classic RPGS.
Pokémon was easy to market to kids because of the Gameboy's handheld nature, but pretending it was a quality RPG for its time is extremely dishonest.
