Stat-wise, Rillaboom is a solid wall of muscle with high HP, good defense, surprisingly great speed, and the highest attack stat of any non-mega starter; and he makes damn good use of it too. His hidden ability also goes extremely well with his lore since he's said to control nature itself with his rhythms; Grassy Surge combos fantastically with him and also fits due to it being a supportive ability that lets him help his team as well. Rillaboom's movepool is his biggest weakpoint, but it's not that bad.
He also has my personal favorite signature move, since I think it's not overpowered but rather was designed to fit him perfectly. Drum Beating hits quite hard and lowering enemy speed ties perfectly with Rillaboom's lore AND his stats, as it allows him to be able to outspeed many enemies after one use of it and still have maximum power. It's not broken by any means, but it's a lot of fun to use and helps him fill a speed control niche since it's 100% accurate as well. I uses Rillaboom for this reason even before he got Grassy Surge, as he fit perfectly on my team. Him getting a buff with Grassy Glide makes me love him even more, since now he's seeing a wide variety of sets and can even sweep.
I also love his G-Max design as it takes advantage of the "big" theme (he turns into an entire forest), and it's also completely ridiculous but in a fun way. Plus, since he auto-sets his terrain, G-Max Drum Solo hits like a truck and it's absolutely beautiful to one-shot a G-Maxed Lapras before it sets up Aurora Veil.
So, essentially, I love his design, he's got a enjoyable personality, and he's both damn good in battle and fun to use without being overpowered or unfair.
He's become my 2nd favorite pokemon at this point and usurped Venusaur as my favorite starter, and I grew up with Gen 1, so that's not an easy thing to do. I just think he's great.
