Poison hasn't drained in the overworld for quite some time, npcs heal you too often, there are healing items aplenty that can just be found or else are cheap compared to how much money you can make, gambling hss been removed, and long dungeons have basically been removed too. Really the only thing of consequence to buy are pokeballs, TMs, maybe a healing item every now and then, and clothes. The games lack any sort of tension or pressure to drain a player's resources for anything meaningful, which if you've ever played any other rpg, is a big part of the whole party/team management thing. In pokemon though, there's no equipment to buy, you don't pay for healing, and items are not a huge necessity. It makes the games feel... shallow, I guess would be the right word? Resource management (or the lack thereof) has been a problem for pokemon for a while.
