Can anyone explain to me how this made any sense to the game designers? What logic did they use to justify this?

One of those is a lie and 2 are Z-moves, which are consistent with all Z-moves and therefore not confusing if you actually play the game.

Meanwhile, ghost describes a Pokemon's physical body and makeup. Ghost moves are physical because you're using your ghostly body parts to attack.

fuck off with that, ghost types are physical because the only damaging ghost move besides night shade in gen 1 was lick. that's the same reason dragon is special. dark type is probably special even though every single dark type introduced until the split was physically proficient or exceptional was probably because they didn't want to flood the type pool with physical types after the introduction of steel.
