The story was shitty and the good animation lasted for one minute. Not too mention Leon is a big Mary Sue with 0 personality, unless being dumb can be counted as one.

It's this. People have laughed at and shat on the Pokemon anime for such a long time now that the quality has actually improved the fans (ESPECIALLY on twitter) feel like they have to have the last laugh and shove it in everyone's faces, bigging up the series and twilight wings beyond what it actually is

A character exists to serve a role needed to tell a story. Leon's role is to be surpassed by the protagonist. Mary Sues don't serve a narrative purpose, the plot serves them.
